Frequently Asked Questions About the Weber State CS Program at SLCC:

• Can I earn a Bachelors in Computer Science from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ by taking classes at Salt Lake Community College?

  Yes. Weber State CS instructors offer face-to-face, upper division CS courses at SLCC Redwood towards a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. 91¶ÌÊÓƵ has an agreement with SLCC in which the prerequisites for those 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS classes may be satisfied by taking lower division CSIS courses from SLCC. The 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS program is offered in the evenings and geared for non-traditional students who may be working during the day.

• How long does it take to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Weber State?

  The answer depends on how many requirements the student has remaining, the number of classes attempted and passed each semester, the frequency with which certain classes are taught each year and the determination of the student. Typically the upper division requirements will take the average student 18-24 months to complete.

• When are the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS classes held on the SLCC Redwood Road campus?

  91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS classes are scheduled from 5:30-7:20pm and from 7:30-9:20pm, on Mondays/ Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays. Nearly all CS classes are 4 credit hours each. Between 3-6 classes are offered each semester, year-round.

   

• Can I earn a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science by taking only classes taught at SLCC Redwood (after fulfilling all lower-division requirements at SLCC)?

  Yes, with one exception: ENGL 3100, which is offered by 91¶ÌÊÓƵ online

• What grades must I earn to satisfy 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS graduation requirements?

  For CS courses, a minimum grade of C is required for all CS courses. A C- is acceptable for Math, Physics and English courses, but students should be aware that a C- may not satisfy specific class prerequisite requirements.

• What GPA is required to graduate from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ?

  An overall GPA of 2.0 is required by 91¶ÌÊÓƵ. A GPA of 2.7 over all CS and support classes is required by the CS Department. Transfer GPAs are not factored into the overall GPA requirement but the grades earned in the CS and CS-equivalent classes are a factor in the CS Department GPA requirement.

• Which CS requirements may be waived for incoming SLCC transfer students?

  CS transfer students who have completed an Associate of Science (or Arts) degree from SLCC may submit a request to their academic advisor to have the following requirements waived: PHYS 2210, CS 1030 (satisfied by CSIS 1030), COMM 2110 and LIBS 1704.

• What are the math requirements for the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS Bachelor's degree?

  Math 1040 Statistics, Math 1210 Calc I and Math 1210 Calc II. You are strongly encouraged to take a math class every single semester until all math requirements are satisfied.

• Does an SLCC AS in CSIS satisfy all lower-division requirements for a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS Bachelor's degree?

  According to the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ-SLCC articulation agreement, specific SLCC CSIS classes satisfy specific 91¶ÌÊÓƵ requirements, on a class-by-class basis. However, an SLCC Associate of Science or Arts satisfies all General Education requirements towards a Bachelor's degree. Refer to the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ SLCC Articulation summary for details.

• Is it true that even after graduating with an SLCC CSIS Associates degree, there may still be lower-division CSIS classes I still need to take to graduate from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ?

  Most SLCC students who graduate with a CSIS Associates degree have two additional lower division classes needed to graduate from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ with a Bachelor's degree in CS. You should factor in these additional 91¶ÌÊÓƵ requirements as you plan to apply for graduation and transfer to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ, especially if you are receiving any form of Financial Aid. Speak to both your SLCC and 91¶ÌÊÓƵ academic advisors as you begin making graduation plans.

• Which English classes should I take at SLCC to satisfy the General Education requirement?

  91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS recommends that you take ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010, in preparation for 91¶ÌÊÓƵ upper division technical writing course ENGL 3100.

• If I take ENGL 2100 at SLCC instead of ENGL 2010, can I still graduate from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ?

  Yes. Students may request that SLCC ENGL 2100 be applied to the ENGL 3100 requirement. However, if this is done, the student may be short two upper division credits for graduation and will have to make them up by taking two or more upper division credit hours from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ. Typically these upper division credits come from taking ENGL 3100. Only students that have successfully completed ENGL 2010 may register for 91¶ÌÊÓƵ ENGL 3100. 

• Must I graduate from SLCC with an AS before I start taking classes from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ?

  You may register for 91¶ÌÊÓƵ upper division classes as soon as you complete their individual prerequisites. Students may take classes from both SLCC and 91¶ÌÊÓƵ simultaneously as their schedules and finances permit. Transfer students should enroll at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ and send an official transcript from SLCC to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ as soon as possible prior to registering for 91¶ÌÊÓƵ classes. The transcript articulation process can take up to six weeks, so please plan ahead.

• What is the CS 2899 Assessment and do I have to pass it?

  The 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS 2899 Assessment is a multiple-choice exam that tests your understanding of the lower division CS requirements. Passing the CS 2899 Assessment is required for all CS students. You register for the exam through 91¶ÌÊÓƵ as you would any other 91¶ÌÊÓƵ class. It is a zero credit hour requirement, which means there is no direct cost to the student. The passing percentage is 60% and a student may take the test up to three times. You may take the exam with a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ-authorized proctor or at a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ testing center. If you use a remote proctor to take any 91¶ÌÊÓƵ exam, any fees or costs are the sole responsibility of the student. As of the date of this writing, SLCC Testing Centers are charging their standard fee for proctoring and those fees are the responsibility of the student. • Can I request a prerequisite override for CS 3750 if I have not yet passed the CS 2899 Assessment?

  CS Department policy forbids the granting of a prerequisite override for CS 3750 when the student has not completed the CS 2899 Assessment.

• Can I receive 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS credit for having a job in the computer science industry, such as an internship?

  Yes. A maximum of 4 credit hours may be applied towards graduation requirements by registering for CS 4890 concurrent with your employment. Speak to your advisor for specific requirements.

• Do I have to pay for parking as an SLCC alumni?

  Yes. However, SLCC Alumni may request a 50% discount from SLCC Parking Services for an annual parking pass.

• Do I need to speak to a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ advisor prior to registering for my first class as an SLCC Transfer Student?

  Meeting with a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ academic advisor is strongly recommended the moment you begin to consider becoming a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS student, when you have questions about registration or specific requirements and as you get close to graduation. A CS advisor is available on the SLCC Redwood campus in the afternoons during the semester on an basis. 

• Are 91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS class prerequisites mandatory or just recommended?

  91¶ÌÊÓƵ CS class prerequisites are mandatory and enforced by the registration system.

• May I take one or more CS classes online or at other 91¶ÌÊÓƵ campuses to meet graduation requirements?

  Yes.

• I have a number of older credits on my transcript. Can those older credits still satisfy current graduation requirements?

  Evaluation of transcripts is performed at the University level, but you may request that the CS department also review your transcript for the application of "expired" credits. In limited circumstances the department may make an exception for you. There are no promises. Meet with an academic advisor as soon as possible to review your individual situation.

• Does Weber State offer a Masters degree in Computer Science at SLCC Redwood?

  The CS Masters degree program is currently offered only at the Ogden campus.

• Does Weber State offer a Networking degree at SLCC Redwood?

  The 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Network Management Technology (NMT) department offers a small selection of classes at SLCC Redwood with limited articulation from the SLCC CSIS Networking emphasis. For more information please visit the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Networking Management Technology website.

   

• I am getting an error when I attempt to register for a CS class.  What do I do?

  For the most part, registration error messages are self-explanatory.  There are two errors that require further explanation for CS students.  Note that at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ, course prerequisites are mandatory, whereas at SLCC many prerequisites are simply recommended.
  
  Prerequisite and Test Score error: the course has prerequisites that do not appear to be satisfied by courses found in your 91¶ÌÊÓƵ transcript. Examine the list of prerequisites carefully to determine which prerequisite you have not satisfied.  
  
  • If the prerequisite is CS 2899 and you have successfully passed the CS 2899 exam, request that the CS 2899 instructor notify the instructor of the class you wish to take that you have successfully completed the exam.  If all other prerequisites are then satisfied, the instructor is authorized to enter a Pre-Req Override on your behalf.
  • If the prerequisites are SLCC transfer credits that have not yet arrived at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ, email the instructor from your 91¶ÌÊÓƵ email account with your W number and an unofficial PDF copy of your SLCC transcript and request a Pre-Req Override. Instructors are not required to admit students into their course who have not completed all of the prerequisites.
