First Aid Kits

First aid kits are a great way to provide care for minor accidents and can provide supplies and protection for bigger accidents until first responders arrive. Although the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not list specific content requirements,  ANSI provides recommendations for first aid kit contents based on OSHA’s classifications for both Class A and Class B work environments.

  • Class A kits are designed to deal with the most common types of workplace injuries.
  • Class B kits are designed to deal with injuries in more complex or high-risk environments and contain a broader range and quantity of supplies.

Given that each work environment comes with unique situations, we recommend first aid kit contents be augmented with additional items or additional quantities of required supplies based on hazards that may exist, determined by the individual departments.

Additionally, OSHA recommends first aid kits are inspected at least monthly, or following a first aid incident when product is used to ensure that the kits remain stocked, in usable condition and that the contents have not expired. We advise that cabinet surfaces be disinfected regularly, during restocking or following any first aid incident when product has been used.

Lastly, we recommend that items be easily identifiable and well organized.

First Aid Kit Containers

First aid kit containers could be portable or have the ability to be mounted. Some may be resistant to water and corrosion or impact resistant. Ensure your container is appropriate for the area you work in and make sure it is clearly marked so your employees can find it in an emergency.
