Welcome to the Department of Health Sciences in the Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of Health Professions!

Our mission is to facilitate the foundational learning that empowers individuals to be successful health professionals. We are committed to providing experiences that promote hands-on learning, critical thinking, inter-professional collaboration, evidence-based problem solving, and ethical and compassionate patient care. Students completing the core health sciences courses will enter their chosen health profession programs with a solid understanding of how the human body works.

No matter where you are on your educational journey, we are here to serve you! With courses in medical terminology, pathophysiology, integrated anatomy and physiology (offered in multiple formats), you'll be prepared to continue into some of the top health profession programs in the country!

    With an Associate of Science in Health Sciences you will take the foundational support courses needed to pursue a career and education in healthcare. This degree is offered with individualized pathways that allow you to focus your education towards the health profession program of your choice.

    If you want choices and the options for customizing your education, a Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) is a great way to study what you want to learn! In addition to endless possibilities, the Health Science Department also offers a BIS option that features courses in Electroneurodiagnositics, Health Sciences and Neuroscience.

  • The Associate of Science in Health Sciences (ASHS) degree includes the prerequisite coursework for other 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Health Professions programs.
  • Six different degree tracks to choose from allow students to customize their degree.

  • An ASHS degree is an essential milestone in pursuing any career in health and medical-related fields.

What are the advantages of the program? 

By individualizing our ASHS tracks, we can help prepare you for your chosen program while earning your Associate of Science degree. This degree will advance your knowledge for any entry-level program or profession in a variety of health and/or medical-related fields. There are many opportunities in these correlated fields such as: healthcare accountant, medical illustrator, bilingual health educator, healthcare technical writer, medical sales, criminal justice worker, music therapist, medical secretary, medical social worker, and many more.

In addition, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the language of medicine, the complexities of the human body, and the response of the biological system to diseases. You will have provided yourself with an enriched education in the health sciences areas from which you can build and advance learning opportunities or any number of careers.

How do I begin?

The university's General Education (GE) requirements are part of the degree, but remember that classes required for General Education are also prerequisites for the health professions programs. All students pursuing an ASHS must complete the core Health Sciences courses, and the remaining courses you complete depend on the track you select. This is an open enrollment program. The application process is open throughout the academic year, with a $25 program fee.
