  Health Information Management Practice Definition:

  Health information management improves the quality of healthcare by insuring that the best information is available to make any healthcare decision. Health information management professionals manage healthcare data and information resources. The profession encompasses services in planning, collecting, aggregating, analyzing, and disseminating individual patient and aggregate clinical data. It serves the healthcare industry including: patient care organizations, payers, research and policy agencies, and other healthcare-related industries.

   

  Health Information Management is a program offered in the Health Administrative Services Department:

  • The Utah State Board of Regents approved the development of a Health Information Management (HIM) program for the College of Health Professions in 1993 based upon evidence of a demonstrated need and strong support for the program by the Utah Hospital Association and the Utah Health Information Management Association.
  • Successful completion of the Health Information Management program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management.  The HIM program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education, allowing graduates to sit for the national registration exam.  Students passing this national examination may use the professional designation of Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

• Assessment Plan

  All accredited HIM programs transitioned to new CAHIIM approved competencies Fall 2021. In preparation for this change, the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ HIM program implemented the new competencies and mapped to the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ HIM Curriculum Fall 2020. The HIM competencies are course-based and are reported to the CAHIIM accrediting body annually through the Annual Program Assessment Report (APAR). Competencies are also evaluated by the HIM Advisory board to meet current HIM Advisory board for review of assessment.
   

  Goals	Outcomes	Evaluation Methods
  HIM graduates will demonstrate HIM entry-level competencies.	A. Eighty percent of all HIM students will complete a mock RHIA exam with a score of 73% or higher.	Annual review of the RHIA mock exam will be conducted to analyze student performance in each knowledge area in comparison with overall performance.
  	B. Eighty percent or more of the subject areas of the graduate survey will show that instruction was satisfactory.	Detailed graduate surveys are conducted annually and the results are analyzed and shared with the HIM Advisory committee.
  	C. An employer survey will be conducted annually to examine the entry-level satisfaction of HIM graduate's competencies. It evaluates HIM graduates working level, overall satisfaction, and provides an opportunity for community members to suggest HIM areas of concern or additions to the curriculum.	Employer and practicum preceptor surveys are conducted annually by the HIM program director. The results are shared with HIM faculty and HIM Advisory committee.
  HIM students will demonstrate effective management and leadership skills during internship.	Students will receive an effective rating (3 or higher) on all criteria of the preceptor evaluation of the HIM internship.	Preceptor evaluations are collected by faculty at the conclusion of the HIM internship. Results will be monitored and reviewed by the Program director and HIM faculty to address concerns.
  The HIM curriculum will include, at minimum, the required AHIMA entry-level competencies taught at appropriate Bloom's taxonomy level.	A. Annually the HIM faculty will conduct an analysis of the HIM curriculum to ensure that all entry-level competencies are being covered throughout the program.	The program director will schedule a meeting with HIM faculty annually Fall semester. The curriculum data (assignments and learning activities) are assessed for coverage of the AHIMA Bachelor Degree Entry Level curricular competencies at appropriate Bloom's taxonomy level.
