Pulmonary Function Testing
Pulmonary function testing gives information about your lungs such as what your total lung volume is, what percent of your lung volume you can force out in one second, and what percentages of your expired air is oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Spirometry
Details: In addition to analyzing your total lung volume and what percent you can force out in one second, full spirometry can also provide more data such as the maximal flow rate of a forced breath out.
Instructions: To ensure the most accurate results as possible, please
- For this test, you must wear nose plugs to ensure that air is only passing in and out of your mouth.
- You will be instructed to take in a deep breath.
- Then, you will be instructed to blow out as hard and as fast as you can.
- You must keep blowing for 6 more seconds to make sure that your lungs are completely empty.
- If you chose to do full spirometry, you will then take a deep breath back in and then fully exhale one more time.
