Computer Lab Service Projects
STUDENT EMPLOYEES BUILD TEAM WHILE EMPOWERING EACH OTHER TO CHANGE THE WORLD
Blankets for Primary Children’s Hospital
This service started in 2012 as a way to build our team and improve communication.
Student team leads decided to make blankets for the Primary Children's Hospital in SLC. The student employees donated money equivalent to one hour of their wages towards the purchase of materials. During our group meetings, the employees cut and tied the blankets. We had 100% participation and at the end of the semester the students collected approximately $300 and made 125 blankets. On learning of our effort, the Primary Children's Hospital's sent their representative to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ to thank the students for their initiative and invited them for a tour of the facility.
The student employees continue to make blankets for local children's hospitals.
Thailand Orphanage
In 2013, one of our international student employees, Ninnet Phurininnat graduated and went back to her home country, Thailand. There she encountered an orphanage of approximately 50 children that were in dire need of school supplies. Empowered that she could make a change, she contacted her alumnus to see if there was anything we could do to help. The computer lab employees immediately mobilized to raise money and in a week raised $380 for the purchase of school supplies and sports equipment that was delivered to the children. The orphanage was also in need of a dinning area and toilets. In collaboration with our Computer Labs, the Center for Community Engaged Learning, College of Business & Economics, Construction Management and the Geography department created a credited Service Trip Abroad program to visit Thailand on May, 2015 to build a dinning room and toilet.
