Associate of Applied Science in Outdoor Leadership

Be guided through an experientially-driven degree and gain the technical skills and certifications to acquire jobs in front-line positions including, but not limited to: outdoor education, winter sports industry, outdoor adventure tour guides, and adventure and wilderness therapy. Degree Information

Grade Requirements

A cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a grade of B- or better in required major courses. Students will receive the final grade they have earned in each course. If a grade in a major course does not meet the minimum requirement for graduation, the student may retake the course once. In special circumstances, by the judgment of the department chair, the student may petition to the Outdoor & Community Recreation committee, as appropriate, to graduate with the lower grade.

Credit Hour Requirements

A minimum of 63 credit hours is required for an associate of applied science degree; 45 of these credits are major requirements.

Professional Certifications

This degree provides students the opportunity to acquire multiple industry certifications including:

  • Wilderness First Responder
  • Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician
  • Single Pitch Instructor (American Mountain Guide Association)
  • Leave No Trace Trainer
  • Swift Water Rescue Technician
  • Avalanche Level 1 (American Avalanche Association)
  • Ski/Snowboard Instructor course prep in partnership with Powder Mountain
