Jan Hamer Prizes for Outstanding Creative Writing

Metaphor is open year-round for literary submissions from current 91¶ÌÊÓÆµ undergraduate students. Early submissions of qualifying genre (creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry) and length (prose: 400-1,000 words; poetry: 1-2 pages) are automatically entered into our annual fall writing contest, the Jan Hamer Prizes for Outstanding Creative Writing. PRIZES

  • First place in each genre wins $50
  • Second place in each genre wins $30
  • Third place in each genre wins $20

Additionally, the first-place submissions winners will be published in the spring following annual issue of Metaphor. Runners-up will also be considered for publication. Winners are announced prior to Metaphor’s annual open mic event at the end of the fall semester. Questions regarding the writing contest can be directed to metaphor@weber.edu.

About Jan Hamer

Jan joined 91¶ÌÊÓÆµ’s English faculty in 2003 and served as advisor for nine volumes of Metaphor. She is a published poet & essayist, cat aficionado, and has been known to take the stage in local theater productions. Jan has been an integral part of 91¶ÌÊÓÆµ’s English faculty as well as a dependable leader in the Ogden arts community.
