91¶ÌÊÓƵ/USU Cold Start & Idle Emissions Research
Status:
2014-2019, completed research project
Description:
The National Center for Automotive Science & Technology at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ (NCAST) and Utah State University have been working together to collect, analyze, and publish research on “Cold Start” emissions versus idling emissions.
We are looking to answer whether cold start emissions are higher in a colder environment as well as how long a catalytic converter is able to remain at an optimal temperature during winter conditions. We will evaluate how long a vehicle must be idling before the emission output is greater than that of a “Cold Start.”
