English Placement

Your English (ENGL) course requirement is referred to as your Composition Requirement

Automatic Placement

English placement is based on your English and reading scores from within the past 60 months. If you took the , that score is converted to an ACT equivalent. Scores more than 60 months old are considered expired and will not be accepted.

ACT Scores & Corresponding Placement
The lower of the reading and English scores will be used for placement.

ACT English Score

  • 12 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 13-16: ENGL 1005, ENGL 1006 or ENGL 1007
  • 17-28: ENGL 1010
  • 29 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

ACT Reading Score

  • 12 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 13-16: ENGL 1005
  • 17-28: ENGL 1010
  • 29 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN THE SAT ON OR AFTER MAY 1, 2024

SAT Scores & Corresponding Placement
Weber State now uses the SAT English Section score for placement. These are then converted into an ACT score equivalent, but students only need to provide their SAT English Section scores. Students can access this score in their account.

SAT English Section Score

  • 370 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 380-470: ENGL 1005 or ENGL 1006/1007
  • 480-690: ENGL 1010
  • 700 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN THE SAT PRIOR TO MAY 1, 2024

SAT Scores & Corresponding Placement 
For students who have taken the SAT prior to May 1, 2024, Weber State uses two-digit SAT subscores for placement. These are then converted into an ACT score equivalent, but students only need to provide SAT subscores. Students can access these in their account. If scores place you in different courses for writing and language vs. reading, the lower score will be used for placement.

SAT Writing & Language Score

  • 18 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 19-23: ENGL 1005 or ENGL 1006/1007
  • 24-34: ENGL 1010
  • 35 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

SAT Reading Score

  • 18 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 19-23: ENGL 1005 or ENGL 1006/1007
  • 24-34: ENGL 1010
  • 35 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

Placement Testing

If you did not take the ACT in the past 60 months or you want to challenge your automatic placement, take the ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills tests to find your placement. You may take ACCUPLACER up to two times within a 12-month period.

ACCUPLACER uses adaptive technology to tailor the test to your skill level by increasing or decreasing difficulty based on your responses to previous questions. 

 
Once you’ve taken the test, your placement will be reflected in . Refer to the English path webpage to see which sequence of English courses makes the most sense for you and your major.
 
ACCUPLACER Score & Corresponding Placement
  • 236 or lower on either test: ENGL 0900
  • 237-249 or lower on either test: ENGL 1005 or ENGL 1006, followed by ENGL 1007
  • 250-269 on both tests: ENGL 1010
  • 270-300 on both tests: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

No Placement: Start at the Beginning

If your ACT/SAT scores are from more than 60 months ago, they are considered expired and you will need to take the ACCUPLACER test to receive placement. 

If you do not take the placement test, you will only be able to enroll in the lowest level English class Weber State offers, ENGL 0900. This could:

  • Increase the cost of earning your degree
  • Delay graduation

Score Expiration & Petitioning

  • ACT and SAT scores expire after 60 months.
