Students at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ have the opportunity to be part of one of the fastest-growing and most competitive clubs on campus, the Professional Sales Student Association. Previously recognized as the DECA club, the PSSA will be competing in sales competitions both regionally and around the country.
“Being part of the PSSA is incredible because of the variety of opportunities it provides us.” Says senior Matt Everett. “I don’t know what other clubs on any college campus give students the chance to compete for legitimate cash prizes. Honestly, it’s one of the best groups of students I’ve had the privilege of working with.”
The aptly named Professional Sales Student Association will still maintain its connection with both the state of Utah DECA chapter, as well as its affiliation with DECA on a national level. However, they will expand their sights on additional competitions hosted by sales organizations across the country such as the University Sales Center Alliance, as well as the Sales Education Foundation.
In April 2019, 25 students participated in the DECA club, now PSSA, with nearly everyone placing at the state competition in Salt Lake City, and later competing at the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida.
“The ICDC competition in Orlando was a fantastic experience, and it really prepared us for this upcoming year’s competitions.” Said senior Vincent Cook. Cook also added that the PSSA provides unique networking opportunities outside of the ordinary classroom. “The connections, experience, and adrenaline make PSSA the ideal club for any student, whether they have an interest in sales or not. PSSA teaches business etiquette, and aligns students for success in real business scenarios.”
Along with competing at both the state and International DECA competitions this upcoming year, students involved in the PSSA will compete in regional competitions hosted by schools such as Utah State University, and national competitions such as the National Sales Challenge hosted by William Patterson University in New Jersey, as well as the AT&T National Sales Challenge in Dallas. Last year, four Professional Sales students from Weber State placed in the regional competition at the AT&T National Sales Challenge, and were invited to compete against 16 other universities in Dallas.
“The AT&T competition was a blast.” Said Everett. “Being in Dallas going head-to-head with legitimate schools from all over really helped give me experience as a sales major. Competitions like those are what really legitimize this club as something special.”
The PSSA is an open organization, welcoming students from any major to join and participate for this upcoming year. Interested students should contact Brock Adams, the organization’s advisor, for additional information about joining, and having the opportunity to broaden their sales experience outside of the classroom.
