General Information

• What is the Writing Center?

  The Ogden Writing Center is a place where students can drop in to consult with tutors on writing for any class or project.

• Where is the Writing Center?

  The Ogden Writing Center is located in Elizabeth Hall, Room 210.

• How do I get the most out of an Ogden Writing Center tutoring session?
  • Remember that you can talk with a tutor before you write the paper in order to understand the instructions or brainstorm ideas to research or write about.
  • You can have as many tutoring sessions as you like while you develop and edit your writing.
  • Plan your time! Come in early in the writing process and leave yourself time to revise. You may also want to schedule follow-up sessions. Planning well allows you time to revise and edit well.
  • Bring a description of the assignment if available. Be as familiar as you can with your professor’s expectations.
  • Unless you want a brainstorming session, bring a copy of the most recent draft of your paper or digital project.
  • The printers in the Writing Center are available to print works to be tutored on and you can open your Adobe projects on our computers.
  • Let the tutor know what you are most concerned about and be sure to ask questions. This relationship is meant to support your ability to compose and revise with confidence and skill.
  • If you make an appointment, be certain to arrive 5-10 minutes early in order to get the nearest available tutor to your time slot. Arriving late means losing the appointment slot, but you can still get in line for a drop-in session.
• How much does it cost to use the Writing Center?

  The Writing Center is a service that is free to all 91¶ÌÊÓƵ students, faculty and staff.

• Who can use the Writing Center?

  Any 91¶ÌÊÓƵ affiliate is welcome to use the Writing Center.

• How can the Writing Center help me?

  Come to the Writing Center to seek consultation with grammar, organization, thesis statements, citations and various other writing related concerns. A Writing Center tutor will sit with you and address your concerns for any writing, from creative pieces to lab reports to graduate school essays.

• Who are the tutors?

  The Writing Center tutors are 91¶ÌÊÓƵ students. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and majors, from technical writing to nursing.

Appointments and Sessions

• Can I just drop off my assignment and pick it up later?

  No. Our focus is to support students in improving their writing skills, so our practice requires meeting students face-to-face, either in person or online. The revising process is the best way to learn and we encourage students to be fully engaged in it.

• Do I need to make an appointment?
  • Drop in: No. We are a drop-in service, so please come on in and put your name on our waiting list to be next in line. Early in the semester, wait times are typically non-existent or short.
  • By appointment: We have our calendar set up with the semester's availability so students can plan ahead and make appointments in advance by coming to the Writing Center front desk or by calling us at 801-626-6463. Making appointments is recommended during certain times of the semester when more students will be seeking our services, such as during midterms and finals.

   

  We will do everything we can to accommodate you, but please don't leave assignments for the last minute!

• What if I am late for an appointment or need to cancel?

  No worries. Your appointment spot will be given to a waiting student and you can be next in the drop-in queue. If you prefer, you can meet online by having your session from any PC or laptop if you message us at write@weber.edu.

  You can also reset your appointment for another time. If you need to cancel, Google Chat or email us at write@weber.edu, call our center at 801-626-6463, or simply come in. Please let us know at your earliest convenience.

• How long are tutoring sessions?

  Each session is set for approximately 30 minutes. Depending on the availability of tutors and the number of students signed up for that day, sessions may go longer if needed. However, if you find that you need more time, we encourage you to return!

  Also, if you make an online appointment, you can elect to set your appointment time for an hour if you prefer.

• What do I need to bring?

  Please bring a printed copy of your writing, any materials or guidelines and questions or concerns about your writing and/or the requirements.

• What are tutoring sessions like?

  You and the tutor sit together at one of our tables with a printed copy of your writing assignment. The tutor will ask if he or she may read your paper softly out loud in order for you both to read along together. We hope you will feel comfortable telling the tutor what you would like to work on with the writing, such as organization, development, thesis statement, structure, grammar, or citations. Be sure to ask questions as you go along!

• How do I apply to work in the Writing Center?
