What to Expect
Calling the Counseling & Psychological Services Center
When you call 801-626-6406, our helpful front desk staff will arrange an initial appointment with a mental health professional as soon as possible, usually within a couple of weeks. The earlier in the semester you call, and the more flexibility you have, the sooner we’ll likely be able to see you.
If you are in crisis and need a same-day appointment, please let the front desk staff member know. Same-day appointments are available for individuals in crisis. Such situations include imminent risk of suicide, recent abuse/assault, psychotic symptoms, and other severe circumstances.
Before Your Appointment
We will ask you to complete some paperwork before your appointment:
- Fill out the intake forms online. All four documents must be filled out before the date/time of your appointment. The name you type into these documents must exactly match the name you used when scheduling your appointment. Please include the letter W when typing your student ID #. If you have a question, call us at 801-626-6406 for verification
- For security reasons, we do not process your intake paperwork before you arrive for your appointment. We do not accept any paperwork via email. If you do not attend your appointment or reschedule it within 2 weeks, your forms will be deleted.
Having all of your paperwork completed before your appointment allows you to receive your full session time. If your paperwork is not complete when you arrive, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.
Your First Appointment
We do our best to meet with you at the time you have scheduled with us. Just let the front desk staff know you have arrived and your counselor will be notified. In the meantime, take a seat in our comfortable waiting room.
During your initial appointment, you will spend about 50 minutes discussing your concerns with your counselor. Your counselor will likely ask you a variety of questions to help clarify your concerns and your needs. Together you will determine some therapy goals and schedule follow-up sessions to help you achieve them. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire periodically to help us assess progress toward your goals. We want to make sure that you feel safe and comfortable and that you are realizing the healthy changes you want.
