Requesting an Appointment
Currently enrolled students can request an initial consultation, a single session, or a crisis session with a counselor by calling 801-626-6406 during business hours or by visiting our office, Suite 280 in the Student Services Building.
Initial Consultation
Let’s talk about what you need.
This is a 30-45 minute session with a counselor where we will discuss your mental health needs and the various services that may be helpful for you. Prior to this appointment, you will fill out required paperwork. The counselor you meet with for an initial consultation may not be the person you do ongoing therapy with.
Single Session Support
Solution-focused support in one meeting.
Not all stressors need ongoing therapy. Single session support is a 50-minute meeting with a counselor where you focus on a specific issue, discuss potential solutions and learn about helpful resources. Prior to this appointment you will fill out required paperwork. If needed, a one-time follow-up session may be arranged to ensure support.
What to expect at your single sessions
Crisis Management
I need help now.
The CPSC provides same-day walk-in appointments (during business hours) for students experiencing mental health crises and/or significant immediate distress. You will be required to complete some initial paperwork and will then meet with a counselor to address immediate needs and implement a stabilization plan.

Intake Session
Let’s assess and make some goals. First session following an Initial Consultation.
If the initial consultation counselor determines that one-on-one counseling would be best for your needs, you will be assigned to a counselor based on your needs and counselor availability. In this 50-minute intake session your counselor will spend time getting to know you and your stressors, will assess aspects of your mental health, and will help you develop goals for counseling. No additional paperwork needs to be completed for this session.
Individual Counseling
Goal-directed one-on-one work. One to 12 sessions per academic year.
After an intake session, your counselor will schedule follow-up individual 50-minute sessions with you. These sessions focus on your counseling goals. Counseling approaches vary based on your needs and may include behaviorally focused interventions, identifying and working through emotions, identifying and changing unhealthy beliefs, or stressor-specific interventions.
Couples Counseling
Goal-directed relationship work. One to 12 sessions per academic year.
As relationships are often impacted by life stressors or may contribute to distress, the CPSC offers counseling for couples at all stages of relationship development. One member of the couple must be an enrolled 91¶ÌÊÓƵ student. Following a couples intake session, your counselor will schedule follow-up 50-minute couples sessions. These sessions focus on your counseling goals. Couples counseling approaches vary based on your needs and may include behaviorally focused interventions, identifying and working through emotions, identifying and changing unhealthy beliefs, or stressor-specific interventions.
Group Counseling
Get focused support together. Typically 5-8 sessions.
Each semester the CPSC offers a variety of support and counseling groups focused on topics relevant to students. Groups typically consist of 3 - 10 students and two group facilitators. Groups typically meet for an hour each week and are available throughout the semester.
Clinical Case Management
Connecting you with community resources. Typically 1-2 sessions following referral by counselor.
For students whose presenting concerns are outside the center’s scope of practice and/or a referral to a community provider is warranted (i.e., persistent and severe distress, students needing a specialist) they may be referred to our clinical case manager. These sessions vary in length and are intended to help you connect with community resources.
