Curriculum

To earn your Master of Arts in English degree, you must complete the core requirements and one emphasis. The core requirements for our degree include the Introduction to Graduate Studies course focusing on academic research and writing and a literary seminar on an Eminent Author or in American, British or World Literature.

Our course schedule follows the full-length university semester calendar and includes the same registration and tuition deadlines, holidays and breaks.

Directed Reading, Project or Thesis

• Individualized Instruction

  If you want individualized instruction (Directed Reading, Project or Thesis), please refer to our Theses & Directed Readings page. You should begin discussing your proposal with the director or the faculty member early in the previous semester.

• Thesis Projects

  Thesis Projects require a committee of three faculty members. It takes time to get these approved and registered. Start as early as possible!

• Directed Reading Courses

  Directed reading courses can count toward your electives and be scheduled each semester. Please contact the program director for more information

• Are Teaching and Research Assistantships available?

  Yes. The program employs Graduate Instructors, Research Assistants, and Teaching Assistants each year. Learn more about the positions on our Professional, Funding & Publishing Opportunities page.

• Does the program offer scholarships?

  Yes. Scholarships are generally awarded during the spring semester for the following year. While awarding scholarships, we carefully consider academic performance, contributions to the profession and contributions to the program. We gladly offer the following scholarships:

  • Trailblazer Scholarship
    • This scholarship will be awarded to students with outstanding potential who actively contribute to a richer, more varied academic landscape.
  • Need-Based Completion Award
    • This scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who is within 12 credit hours of graduation and who has demonstrated financial need. 
  • Excellence in Scholarship or Creativity Award
    • This scholarship will be awarded to a student who excels in scholarly or creative activities that go beyond the classroom.
  • Wildcat Scholarship
    • This scholarship will be awarded to a student who received their undergraduate degree from Weber State with the highest GPA of all applicants that cycle.

• How much will my Master of Arts in English degree cost?

  The tuition and fee table provides an estimated cost to complete the degree. Most students complete the 33-credit-hour minimum in six semesters.

• Is funding available for conference travel?

  Yes. We love it when our students can present their work! Please let the MA in English program director know if you can present at a conference. You are eligible for up to $750 to support your conference fees and travel. Learn more on our Professional, Funding & Publishing Opportunities page.
