Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) 

 

The 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Medical Laboratory Sciences programs are organized in a "ladder" format, with the four-year curriculum divided into two programs, the Associate of Applied Science Program (AAS) which awards graduates a title of Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), and the Bachelor of Science (BS) which awards a title of Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), also known as Medical Technology/Technologist (MT). 

To be accepted into the BS program, students must first complete the AAS program. From there, students will have the option to transition into the BS program and take BS level courses in the third and fourth years. A maximum of 32 students are accepted each year.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences will focus on fundamental and ethical skills, including:

  • Professional conduct and ethical behavior
  • Effective communication skills
  • Patient safety
  • Performance of waived, moderate, and high complexity laboratory procedures to include pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical phases of laboratory testing.
  • Application of mathematical calculations to laboratory situations
  • Correlation of theory with laboratory work
  • Correlation of laboratory findings to common disease
  • Laboratory management and interprofessional education (IPE)

As a Bachelor of Science graduate in Medical Laboratory Sciences, you'll be able to work in a variety of high demand and growing healthcare settings, such as:

  • The Bachelor of Science program in the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department has two curriculum tracks:

    TRACK I is for those who intend to work as clinical laboratory scientists or who intend to apply to physician assistant or other graduate schools. Upon graduation, you will first take a national certification exam that will qualify you to work in a hospital or clinic laboratory settings. Positions are also available in industrial labs, education, medical sales, medical research, forensics, medical administration, cytology, histology, etc. Average starting salaries for BS graduates in hospital laboratories begin around $52,000.

    TRACK II contains pre-professional course requirements (3 upper division courses). If you are planning to apply to medical, dental, or veterinary schools, this track will prepare you for your continuing education and ever upward goals.

  • Step 1: Apply & Track

    Enroll at

    91¶ÌÊÓƵ (91¶ÌÊÓƵ) is an open-enrollment university, you can apply anytime by visiting the link above. 

    Don't forget, once a Wildcat always a Wildcat. If you've taken a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ course in the past (including concurrently) please visit Return to Weber for more information.

    Students who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences on campus, must have earned an Associate of Applied Science at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ, or be an ASCP certified Medical Laboratory Technician with recent laboratory experience in the last 5 years.

     

    Choose a Track

    The Bachelor of Science program has two tracks:

    • Track I is for those who intend to work as clinical laboratory scientists or who intend to apply to a Physician Assistant (PA) program or other graduate school programs.
    • Track II contains pre-professional course requirements for those who plan on continuing their education to Medical, Dental or Veterinary schools.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     


     

  • Step 2: Curriculum Pattern


    Choose a Curriculum Pattern

    The Bachelor of Science program has three curriculum patterns, students will be asked to indicate their pattern of interest on their application. For assistance in determining your pattern, please make an appointment with Kendal Beazer

    • Traditional 4-Semester Pattern: Intended for Track I students who have three or more BS general education courses left to complete. This pattern is also indicated for all Track II students.
    • Accelerated 3-Semester Pattern: Intended for Track I students who have completed all but one or two BS general education courses. Special approval for this pattern is not required. However, we strongly recommend meeting with a faculty advisor to review course load and determine sustainability for this pattern.
    • Accelerated 2-Semester Pattern: Intended for Track I students who have completed all BS general education and support course requirements. Department approval required for this pattern. To qualify for 2-semester pattern, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 AND a passing score on the MLT ASCP certification exam. Due to scheduling and workload requirements, students accepted into this pattern are advised to refrain from time-consuming obligations (i.e. job, committees, clubs, etc.) that require more than 10-15 hours per week during the academic year in which they are accelerating. 


    Note

    • There are limited spots available each year for our accelerated patterns. Priority is given to students with the highest GPA and history of excellent lab performance.
    • Because a number of PA schools begin as early as May, Pre-PA students are asked to follow the 3 or 4 semester pattern to ensure timely completion of MLS summer clinical rotations before beginning PA school. 
  • Step 3: Program Application


    To apply to the MLS BS in Medical Laboratory Science campus program, you will complete an online application.

    BEFORE you start your application, please note the following:

    • Applicants will be required to upload a copy of their unofficial transcripts (PDF format preferred)
    • A one-time, non-refundable $25 fee application fee will be required (payable via credit card)
    • International students will be asked to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting an English Proficiency Exam Score on their application

    Once your application is submitted and your fall registration date is open, you are allowed to register for MLS classes and labs. However, if you are accepted into the program but not accepted into the 2-semester accelerated pattern, you will need to withdraw from some of your MLS classes and follow the 3 or 4 semester patterns.

AFTER YOU APPLY INFORMATION

During the month of April/May, all applicants will be allowed to register for MLS fall courses. 

Once acceptance notifications are sent, if you are not accepted into the program you will be notified to drop the MLS classes through your registration portal. If accepted, you must claim your spot by June 1st. 

Accepted students will then be required to complete a drug screen, background check and provide record of immunizations to include Hep B, MMR, Varicella and TDAP no earlier than one year before clinical rotations. In addition, you will need to get your flu vaccine and 2-step TB test between September and December of the year of acceptance.
