The Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences will focus on fundamental and ethical skills, including:

  • Professional conduct and ethical behavior
  • Effective communication skills
  • Patient safety
  • Performance of waived, moderate, and high complexity laboratory procedures to include pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing 
  • Correlation of theory with laboratory work
  • Correlation of laboratory findings to common disease
  • Laboratory management and interprofessional education (IPE)

    TIP: Due to the extensive laboratory requirements in our online program, we strongly recommend that students stick to 8-10 credit hours per semester to help balance their workload, laboratory requirements and course load.

    The online Bachelor of Science program in the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department heavily relies on your clinical mentor and laboratory competencies components.

    • CHEM 1110/1115: Elementary Chemistry (5) 
    • CHEM 1120/1125: Elementary Organic/Biochemistry (5) 
    • HTHS 1110 LS: Integrated Human Anatomy & Physiology I (4) 
    • HTHS 1111: Integrated Human Anatomy & Physiology II (4) 
    • MICR 1113: Intro. Microbiology or equivalent (3)

    • PUBH 3200: Epidemiology (3) 

    OR

    • MICR 3603: Advanced Microbiology for Health Professions (3) 

    OR

    • HAS 3010: Professionalism in Healthcare (3)

    Total credit hours: 24 credit hours 

    Note: Equivalent courses completed at regionally accredited institutions may be accepted.

  • Step 1: Apply & Place

    Enroll at  for general admissions. This is required PRIOR to applying to the MLS program. $30 general admissions application fee.

    If you are unsure if you need placement testing, check your CatTracks or contact your MLS Advisor from your e-weber email with your W#. Students with previous degrees or math or English courses may not need placement testing.

  • Step 2: Complete Pre-Reqs & Secure Clinical Support


    The following academic and clinical requirements must be met prior to submitting MLS application:

    Academic Requirements:

    • Overall GPA of 2.7 or higher 
    • Completion of English 2010 and QL math (MATH 1030, 1035, 1040, or 1050) 
    • Completion of 4 support courses with a C grade or better, see Required Support Courses above

     

    Clinical Requirements:

    • Clinical support in Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, and Microbiology/Bacteriology. We do not assist with clinical placement. 

     

  • Step 3: Program Application


    Secondary program application is required.

    BEFORE you start your MLS application, please note the following:

    • MLT (ASCP) certification is REQUIRED to apply 
      • MT (AMT) or MT (AAB) certification also acceptable
      • Some state certifications are also accepted 
    • MLS priority application deadlines:
      • Fall semester: May 1
      • Spring semester: September 1  
      • Summer semester: February 1
    • A one-time, non-refundable $95 fee application fee will be required (payable via credit card)
    • You must upload the MLS Statement of Support with your application

     

    Incomplete applications will be denied. If your application is denied, you will be required to reapply and repay the $95 application fee.
