Utah Rock Art, Archaeology, and History

Program Details

Utah is famous for its amazing rock art created by Native American and later European cultures. Participants will travel to central Utah to visit archaeological sites and rock art in places like Clear Creek Canyon, Capitol Reef National Park, and Sego Canyon. We will also view archaeological collections at Fremont Indian State Park Museum, Anasazi State Park Museum, and receive a behind the scenes tour at the Prehistoric Museum in Price. Students will come away with a greater understanding of the prehistoric and historic peoples and cultures of Utah.

Requirements:

  • Participants must be in good physical health and be able to hike 3-4 miles a day.

$705 (Including all transportation)

Suggested Payment Schedule (This does not need to be followed exactly. It is a guide so you do not have to pay so much at the end, but you can pay as much or as little as you want so long as the trip is paid in full before you leave):

Deposit is due 72 hours after registration. If not paid in that timeframe, you may be dropped from your trip.

Payments can now be made online! Visit this website for instructions on how to pay your deposit and future payments online. Charges should show on your account within 24-48 hours after registration. If you want to pay with cash or check, please pay at the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning.

Included: accommodation, meals, transportation, misc. fees, insurance, and tuition.

Not included: any unscheduled travel, incidentals

Itinerary

Itinerary is subject to change. Please attend all pre-departure meetings!

  • May 13- Depart from 91¶ÌÊÓƵ and visit archaeological sites and rock art in Clear Creek Canyon, Fremont Indian State Park, and arrive at the Capitol Reef National Park field station.
  • May 14- Spend the day visiting archaeological sites and rock art in Capitol Reef National Park, hike the Hickman Bridge trail, and explore historic Fruita.
  • May 15- Visit Anasazi State Park Museum and a prehistoric Puebloan settlement; view prehistoric granaries near Escalante, and visit Fremont, Numic, and historic rock art in the area.
  • May 16- Explore archaeological sites and rock art in Sego Canyon.
  • May 17- Examine artifacts and collections at the Prehistoric Museum in Price and receive a behind the scenes tour and exclusive lecture on archaeological research from curator Dr. Timothy Riley. Return to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ.

Academic Courses

Students who participate in this study abroad program will be able to register for up to one (1) semester credits through 91¶ÌÊÓƵ in

ANTH 2950 (Elementary Anthropology Field Trip): 1 credit

Program Directors

Drs. David Yoder and Kathryn Mackay will be leading the course and providing all instruction.

Dr. Yoder has 20 years of archaeological experience, having excavated over 40 archaeological sites throughout the region and directed the survey of thousands of acres on federal and state lands. He served as the archaeologist in the Utah Governor's office for eight years and has been teaching at academic institutions for over a decade.

Dr. Mackay is an Emeritus Professor of History at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ who has spent over 35 years educating
students and the community about the history of the intermountain West.

Trip Cancellations

If Weber State cancels a trip for any reason, all participants will be refunded 100% of funds paid to the school. If a participant withdraws from the program for any reason, they are subject to the refund policy found on the first page of the application.  Deposits are always non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Weber State.  No refunds will be issued 30 days prior to program start date. 

Refunds will NOT be given to students due to COVID-19 concerns. Before programs were canceled in 2020, every student was given the option to withdraw from programs without penalty due to COVID-19. This year students are applying, cognizant of the pandemic. Weber State will not intentionally place students into high risk situations. We will work together with Program Leaders and Departments on canceling should the destination demonstrate increased risks, be they from COVID or any other concern. As such, students must abide by the standard refund policy.
