Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE 4 DIFFERENT BENJAMIN A. GILMAN SCHOLARSHIPS. MOST STUDENTS WILL APPLY FOR THIS ONE.

For Pell Grant Eligible Students Only. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. The scholarship provides funds of up to $5,000 to nearly 3,000 students per year to pursue study programs outside of the United States for up to one year.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child and spousal dependents of active or activated US military personnel during the time of application to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
STEM Supplemental Award

In support of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, the Gilman Program is providing supplemental awards of up to $1,000 each for a Gilman scholar to conduct STEM-related research abroad as part of their study abroad or international internship program. Students can select to be considered for the STEM Supplemental Award through the regular Gilman application. Students applying for this supplemental award will need to share additional details (no more than 1,000 characters) about STEM research associated with their study abroad program and its contribution to their future academic and/or career goals. They will also include their anticipated research costs as part of their estimated total cost.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
Critical Need Language Award

Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country or location in which the language is predominantly spoken can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000. Critical Need Language Awards for a country or location where a language is not predominantly spoken may be considered for applicants who make a strong case for their desired location in the application essay. As only a limited number of Critical Need Language Awards are available, not all students who are studying the identified languages will receive a Critical Need Language Award. Students can select to be considered for the Critical Need Language Award through the regular Gilman application.

Boren Awards for International Study sponsored by the National Security Exchange Program (NSEP)

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide some of the most prestigious awards available. Ranging from $8000 to $20,000, these programs help students study abroad while training for future careers. Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central, and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Bridging Scholarship

For students planning to study abroad in Japan. The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that last at least 3 months. Japanese language study is NOT a prerequisite. Applicants must be US Citizens and be undergraduate students majoring in ANY field. Semester scholarships are valued at $3,500. Academic-year awards are valued at $6,000. Applications are accepted ONCE per year for Bridging Scholarships.

Students expecting to study abroad Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Academic Year 2024-25 must apply by this March deadline.

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX)

BUTEX offers scholarships for fulltime degree seeking students at U.S. universities. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student at a UK university which is a member of BUTEX. All institutions Weber State is partnered with in the UK are members of BUTEX. BUTEX scholarships are based on a calendar year, NOT the academic year. So, if you are going on exchange in the Fall 2025 semester, you will need to apply for the 2024 deadline. Award amount is £500.

Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS)

THIS AWARD IS DIFFERENT THAN THE BENJAMIN A. GILMAN CRITICAL NEED LANGUAGES AWARD. IF YOU ARE STUDYING A LANGUAGE, PLEASE APPLY FOR BOTH.

Provided by the U.S. Department of State, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a wide range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.

Languages that qualify are the same as the Benjamin A. Gilman Critical Need Languages Award, however this award excludes Bangla and Hebrew.

Overseas Ambassador Program

The Overseas Ambassador Program is for current students who are planning to study abroad through 91¶ÌÊÓƵ's Study Abroad programs for a full semester or academic year. You will serve as an overseas correspondent, sharing your experiences to motivate other students to study abroad. You will write one article per month on a topic related to education abroad, write about your experience on social media, document your experience through photos and videos, and share your experiences upon return via an article and video. Award amount is a $500 stipend.

Eligibility: Be currently enrolled full-time at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ, participate in a semester/summer or year-long study abroad program, have a minimum 2.75 GPA, have a passion for international engagement, be a leader on campus and in your community, be committed to challenging stereotypes and leading a dialogue that promotes positive social change, and have experience with photography and video production (bonus points).

Application Deadline: There are 3 cycles per year. Check the website for the next deadline.

Ernst Mach Grant (Fachhochschule)

The Ernst Mach Grant is for students (both undergrad and grad students) studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences. Grant provides a monthly stipend to help with housing and cost of living expenses.

Freeman-ASIA

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Minimum GPA is 2.8. Must have at least one semester of enrollment remaining at Weber upon return. Minimum program length is 8 weeks for Summer, and 12 weeks for a semester. Internships are not eligible. Must have little or no previous experience in the country in which you plan to study.

Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States.

Applicants looking to study abroad in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, Academic Year 2024-25, and Spring 2025 should apply for the April deadline.

Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2010 to address the need for an independent study abroad scholarship provider. FEA is expanding access to study abroad by raising awareness of its benefits to the individual and value to the collective, and by granting scholarships of up to $10,000.

Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad and those destined for non-traditional locations are given preference, in an effort to make the demographics of U.S. undergraduates studying abroad reflect the rich variations of the U.S. population. One application enters you to apply for 20+ scholarships through FEA.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

DAAD offers a plethora of award opportunities to students at all levels and areas of study. Scholarships may be granted to students studying abroad for a minimum of one semester and a maximum of one academic year.

Award amounts and application deadlines vary by scholarship.

Go Overseas Scholarship

This scholarship is available to any undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in or in the process of applying to any study abroad program. Award amount varies, but can be upwards of $15,000.

Golden Key

Golden Key International Honour Society is an internationally recognized, nonprofit organization that provides merit based competitive scholarships. Golden Key invites only the top 15% of juniors and seniors and high-achieving graduate school students to be members. This scholarship assists Golden Key members who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. The study abroad program cannot have been completed prior to the application deadline date.

Award amounts vary. Application deadline is typically Mid-December.

International Education Financial Aid (IEFA)

The International Education Financial Aid (IEFA) is a comprehensive database of scholarships available for students looking to study abroad. Simply note what you are studying, your destination country, and where you are from (USA), and the database will give you a list of scholarships to apply for.

Award amounts and application deadlines vary based on the scholarship.

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship

Applicants must be between 18 to 30 years of age. Students must be enrolled as undergraduate students in institutions outside of Japan prior to being a scholarship recipient and they must return to this home institution upon completion of the MEXT scholarship. Individuals applying for this scholarship must be enrolled in a major in Japanese language and/or Japanese culture. Students enrolled in a major other than Japanese language or Japanese culture, who wish to study particular aspects of Japan (engineering, economy, agriculture, architecture, art, etc.) as part of their major studies, should apply to JASSO for admission to the .

National Italian American Foundation Scholarships

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships and grants to outstanding students in the summer for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and divided between two groups of students: Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements; students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Scholarship awards range from $2,500-$10,000.

Phi Kappa Phi

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants help undergraduate students pay for their study abroad programs. One hundred twenty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Applicants do NOT have to be society members, but must attend an institution with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter (91¶ÌÊÓƵ is an active chapter). You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.75, have applied to or been accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the session deadline and provide a letter of acceptance or a letter confirming your application, on official letterhead, as part of your application.

Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship

The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. Tortuga's mission is to help travelers avoid the cost and hassle of checked luggage with carry-on-sized travel backpacks, including students studying abroad. When customers purchase luggage from Tortuga for their trips, they are “paying it forward” by funding scholarships for students like you.

Eligibility: Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or currently studying in the US on a student visa; be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ; have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit through 91¶ÌÊÓƵ. This scholarship is not available for faculty-led short-term programs.
