Program Details

This study abroad program will immerse students in the culture of Spain through the analysis of the lives of people who inhabit the Iberian Peninsula and their interactions with an enviroment common to most people around Southern Spain and the Mediterranean. Students will visit several cities and towns within al-Andalus and the Mediterranean. They will learn about the roles, lives and contributions of poeple in ancient cultures and their role today. The program will challenge the idea of "Spanishness" as a homogeneous concept based on commonly held views and perceptions of what being "Spanish" means.

Selection Criteria:

Students should be 18+, or have approval of the program directors. This program is open to any major as long as they have fulfilled the prerequisites. Walking will take place often.

Cost: $3,200

Deposit:$500

Pay deposit and all payments to the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning in person or pay over the phone with a credit card at (801) 626-6600. Please, do not pay on campus, all payments need to be made at the Hurst Center.

Program Directors

Dr. Diego Batista has directed a program in Costa rica(Summer 2012), and Dr. Electra Fielding has directed a program in Costa Rica(Summer 2013). Both professors are natives of Spain. They also teach similar courses as their regular load during the school year.

Trip Cancellations

If the trip is canceled, all participants will be refunded. Any refunds for withdrawals from the program will be determined by the Study Abroad Director according to the recoverability of incurred costs and fees and according to the Continuing Education Policy. Once the group leaves all costs are non-refundable in their entirety. Dates & process may change. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of any such changes by staying in contact with the program director.
