Students will gain a well-rounded understanding of health care in Ghana. They will be able to compare and contrast the health care system with that of the U.S. Students. They will learn about the Ghana national Health Insurance scheme, cost, coverage, etc. The learning outcome of the Ghana Study Abroad Trip will assist students in clinics, providing basic assessments and community health education, giving education to nursing and midwifery students. This will include tours of large government hospitals, community hospitals, and rural clinics. Many opportunities will be available for students to work in these environments as health care providers, learning side by side with local practitioners.
Selection Criteria:
Participants should be in good physical health and see a physician prior to traveling in order to obtain appropriate medications for the prevention of malaria and other possible illnesses. This program requires participants to work well as a team while handling extreme conditions such as heat, humidity, modest lodging, limited variety of foods, and extreme poverty stricken surroundings. There will be times when students may be expected to walk long distances. There are walking tours on somewhat rough terrain.
Students should be declared as pre-med, pre-PA, or FNP students.
