Ancient Greece and Human Happiness is an interdisciplinary course which integrates the philosophy, history, archaeology, and art of ancient Greece and Rome. Critical engagement in key debates will form the foundation of the course. There will be an emphasis on questions concerning human happiness and the variety of answers offered by Greek thinkers and societies. The parallel rise and fall of civilizations will be examined, from the earliest Minoans to Classical Greece to the fall of Rome. The intricacies of cultural change, the relationship between individual and society, and the nature of human existence will be explored. Students will also come away with an understanding of how modern Western culture, and their own lives, are deeply tied to the Ancient West. A cooking class, snorkeling among the sunken city of Epidaurus, and attending a Greek theater performance are some of the activities that will take place on this study abroad.
