Departmental Honors in Communication

For students already pursuing general honors or who are interested in communication-specific honors, Departmental Honors may be the right choice for you. Departmental Honors students are recognized at graduation with a cord, as well as on official transcripts and diplomas.

  • In your eWeber portal, find the and navigate to the Communication application.
  • Complete the application for Departmental Honors and submit it to the Honors Program.

Departmental Honors Requirements

Students must meet all of the following prerequisites and requirements to be eligible for Departmental Honors in the Department of Communication:

Prerequisites

  • Be a declared major in Communication.
  • Meet with the Departmental Honors advisor, Hailey Gillen Hoke.

Requirements

  • Complete all the requirements for a Communication degree.
  • Earn a cumulative 3.5 university GPA and a 3.7 major GPA.

Choose one of the requirements from each of the following three categories:

Engagement:

  • Attend at least two events through the Honors Program and two from your department.
  • Enroll in and complete an Honors (HNRS) course. Honors course information is available on the .

Research and Scholarship:

  • Give a presentation at a regional or national conference relevant to your field of study or at a conference such as the Utah Communication Association, Western States Communication Association, a regional broadcasting or journalism conference or the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Undergraduate Research & Engagement Symposium.
  • Publish an original work in a local, regional or national referred journal within your field of study.

Service and Leadership:

  • Complete 30 hours or more of community service over a continuous period of time with a single organization within your field of study, to be completed by mid-semester of your last semester.
  • Serve in leadership for at least one semester for the Honors Student Advisory Board (HSAB), 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Student Association (91¶ÌÊÓƵSA), or student clubs and organizations relevant to your field of study.
