Bachelor of Arts in English Teaching

The English Teaching program at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ prepares students to effectively teach students in secondary education. Our majors graduate not only with comprehensive knowledge in their content area but also with deep pedagogical knowledge and training. Students are regularly recruited for employment by area school districts, often securing positions even before they graduate. Additionally, many of our students go on to excel in graduate programs.

The English Teaching program is noted for:

  • Small, seminar-style courses that feature integrated teaching.
  • High degrees of interconnectivity and mentorship among faculty and students.
  • An emphasis on transformative practices for fair and compassionate education.
  • High-impact professionalizing experiences and opportunities.

Program Details

There are 5 courses in the program:

  • Young Adult Literature (ENG 2420) is the introductory course meant to be taken early in a student’s undergraduate program. This course is a prerequisite for all other English Teaching courses. It is typically offered during both the Fall and Spring semesters. (English 2010 is a prerequisite for registration in this course.)
  • Topics in English Teaching (ENG 3755) is a variable title course meant to be taken after the Young Adult Literature course and before English 3020 and 3410. The course is typically offered in the Fall. (Of the 4 required literature courses in the major, 3 should be completed before taking this class. Please note that summer courses may be required.)
  • Teaching English (ENG 3020) and Teaching Writing (ENG 3410) should be taken together. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education program before registering for these courses. Ideally, the courses should be taken after the completion of Procore. Both English 3020 and English 3410 are offered in the Fall. (Please note: all of the required literature courses for the major should be completed before taking these classes.)
  • The English Teaching Capstone (ENG 4910) is a 1-hour, an online course meant to be taken during a student’s final semester, as they are completing their student teaching. This course is offered during both the Fall and Spring semesters.
