English Minor
The English minor consists of 21 credit hours of coursework with a variety of classes in writing, language and literature that complement any major. In this minor, you’ll develop marketable skills in creative and critical thinking, writing and organization. You’ll also explore literature and address the big issues of humanity — identity, meaning, purpose, love, death — that profoundly enrich both your inner and outer life. An English minor will equip you to create a successful and meaningful future.

The ESL minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework including classes in second-language acquisition, applied linguistics, literacy strategies and formal field experience in teaching. You will be prepared to teach English to students both in Utah and internationally.

The English teaching minor consists of 24 credit hours of coursework in both English and teaching that will deepen your knowledge of American and British literature, language structure and function, and different genres of writing. The English teaching minor is also a pathway to becoming a licensed secondary English teacher.

The interdisciplinary linguistics minor consists of 21 credit hours of coursework and a 3-credit-hour capstone course in the scientific study of human languages. You will learn the foundations of linguistics as well as language structures and applications of linguistics.

The literary editing minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework to provide you with the knowledge base, skills and practical experience you need to work in the publishing industry. You will learn the foundations of creative writing and editing, as well as layout and graphics, and put these skills to use in an internship or working with 91¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Metaphor.

The professional and technical writing minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework that will teach you to communicate technical information to various audiences in a clear and concise way. Technical writing applies to every discipline and industry. During your professional and technical writing minor, you’ll hone your writing skills and work with real clients to produce a variety of technical documents. With a required internship, you’ll develop the skills you need to successfully navigate the professional and technical writing world.

Screenwriting Minor
The Screenwriting Minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework including classes that introduce students to the concepts, skills and practical experience needed to enter the screenwriting industry. It offers an opportunity for students interested in creative writing of any kind, including film studies, theater, video game design, genre adaptation (print or stage to film) and film design or production. This minor would complement many majors, including English, creative writing, theatre, visual art and design, communication or film studies.
