Qualifying Round

Consists of a written exam, tasks performed at 12 workstations, and industry Interviews. The workstations will test individual team members' skills and knowledge in automotive diagnosis, service, and repair. The highest-scoring students from each school will move on.

Note: Teachers are encouraged to attend the continuing education sessions to earn an extra 50 points for their team. 

Note: The students are encouraged to complete the ASE Entry Level Maintenance and Light Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Suspension and Steering, and Brakes.  The total points from all four (4) tests will be added to the team’s qualifying score. The school is responsible for the test fee. Scores are due to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Auto Tech on November 3, 2023 91¶ÌÊÓƵ: automotivetechnology@weber.edu.

Job Shadow

The championship teams are required to job shadow with their school's sponsoring employer between the qualifying and championship round. 

The teachers are required to coordinate job shadow schedules between the student and the employer.

The teachers are required to attend bi-weekly check-in meetings.

The employers are required to attend bi-weekly check-in meetings.

Championship Round

Consists of a 3-hour on-vehicle diagnosis. Each school team will comprise the three highest-scoring students from the Qualifying Round. The alternate and the two competitors will not be assigned until the day of the final round.

The two competitors will compete in the on-vehicle diagnosis.

The alternate may participate in an alternative competition that will be prepared.

• High school seniors only
• Students from high school and tech school programs welcome
• No remote testing
• Job Shadow is Mandatory

Tools and Equipment

• Safety Glasses/Goggles or approved prescription eyeglasses are required.
• DVOM - provided by 91¶ÌÊÓƵ or bring your own
• Scan Tools - provided 91¶ÌÊÓƵ
• Service Information - provided by ALLDATA
• Hazmat Training - provided by CCar
• Adhesive and Sealant Training- provided by Permatex

Clothing

• All contestants must wear the contest shirt and long pants.
• All contestants must wear work shoes.
• No cell phones or smart watches.

Safety

• Team members are prohibited from opening pressurized raw fuel components, tubing, or hoses.
• Approved prescription eyeglasses, goggles, or safety glasses MUST be worn when working on a vehicle.
• Metal rings, watches, bracelets, and long necklaces must be removed before the competition.
• Parking brakes must be applied at all times during the competition.
• Team members must not place the gear shift lever in the DRIVE or REVERSE positions while the engine runs.
• Team members are NOT permitted to drive the competition vehicles.

Students

• No cell phone use during the competition.
• Students will be separated from their teammates throughout the Qualifying Round. This includes breaks and during lunch.
• Students will remain with their designated rotation group throughout the day, including lunch.
• A designated dining area will be noted for each rotation group for the lunch break.

Instructors

• Instructors may observe the competition but are prohibited from entering the Workstations or vehicle bay throughout the competition.
• Instructors may remain outside the vehicle bay without communication with their team during the on-vehicle portion of the competition.
• Instructors may visit with their students' rotation groups during the lunch break.

Dealer Service Mentors

• Mentors may observe the competition but are prohibited from entering the Workstations or vehicle bay throughout the competition.
• Mentors may remain outside of the vehicle bay without communicating with their team during the on-vehicle portion of the competition.

Disqualification

• Failure to follow competition rules and/or workstation monitor instructions.
• Use of a cell phone during the competition.
• Communicating with school team members in another Workstation group during the Workstation phase.
• Violating shop safety practices.
• Ineligible team member.
• Display of poor conduct by an instructor or team member.
• Communicating with anyone other than a team member, judge, stall monitor, or written examination proctor during the on-vehicle phase of the competition.
• Use of written materials not supplied by the contest committee.
• Failure to complete employer job shadow

Written Exam

A 50-question ASE-provided exam will given to each participant. 

Interviews

Students will be individually interviewed by service managers/dealer management and scored on their resumes and interview and communication skills. The scores from each student will count as part of the total team score.  Students will be interviewed by two different judges during this rotation. Interviews are 10 minutes each. Students must provide a copy of their resume to each judge. 

Workstations

A possible score of 100 points per Workstation

1. Technical Service Information:  Technicians should demonstrate the ability to retrieve service information from currently accepted industry sources. Contestants will be tested on their ability to use online repair information to diagnose and fix maintenance problems they are likely to encounter in their jobs. Workstation provided by ALLDATA.
2. Electrical Diagnostic I:  Students must demonstrate their knowledge of electrical systems, OHM’s law, and DVOM usage. Workstation provided by 91¶ÌÊÓƵ
3. Electrical Diagnostic II:  Students must demonstrate their knowledge of electrical systems, OHM’s law, and DVOM usage. Workstation provided by 91¶ÌÊÓƵ
4. Serpentine Belts:  Students will answer 20 questions in relation to the operation of serpentine belts. Workstation provided by Gates Corporation.
5. Fasteners:  Students will answer multiple choice questions on lengths (dimensions), plating, materials, styles of assorted fasteners, rivets, and fittings used in repair maintenance.  Workstation provided by Imperial Supply.
6. Safety & Environmental:  This station will test students' knowledge of the general guidelines and practices for dealing with hazardous materials and safety protocols/regulations in a shop environment. Workstation provided by CCAR.
7. Electrical Circuits:  Students will use the Applied Electrical Trainer (Model 4810) to test competitors' circuit construction and analysis knowledge.  Competitors must assemble series and parallel circuits using the provided equipment and wiring diagrams.  Analysis of the circuit operation using a digital multi-meter may be required to take voltage, current, and/or resistance readings. Workstation provided by ATech.
8. Sealants and Adhesives: Students will answer multiple-choice questions on sealing, cleaning, lubricating, and securing. Resources will be Product Selection Charts and Guides. Workstation provided by Permatex
9. Coolants & Diesel Exhaust Fluid:  This station will assess a technician’s knowledge of current coolant technologies as well as diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and DEF delivery systems.  Workstation provided by Old World PEAK.
10. Electrical:  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of electrical systems, Diagram usage, building circuits, and DVOM usage. Workstation provided by Mega-Tech
11. 91¶ÌÊÓƵ 91¶ÌÊÓƵ: Students will meet with the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Office to discuss opportunities at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ.
12. Interviews: Each student will participate in two 10-minute interviews with two employers. Students will provide a copy of their resume to each interviewer.

On-Car Diagnostics

On Vehicle Inspection & Repair – Each two-person student team has an allotted three (3) hours to interpret, diagnose, and repair several preassigned problems on the vehicle based on the repair order. Each correctly repaired bug is worth a set number of points depending on the difficulty level.

Note: Alternate student competitors and Instructors must remain outside the team’s workstation area and cannot communicate with any team members during the competition.

Continuing Education for Instructors

ASE Presentation: How to run an effective CTE Advisory Committee. 

Note: The one (1) team-designated Instructor attending CE sessions will receive 50 points credited to their team’s overall score for each CE session attended.

School Sponsorship

Pay the school sponsorship fee of $300.

Qualifying Round

Supply two representatives to interview high school students during contest rotations.

Job Shadows

A master technician mentors a team of 3 high school seniors for two months on a dedicated new vehicle, including service information and a scan tool. A task list will be provided. The employer and the instructor determine the schedule.

The student should be exposed to and trained on the following:

• Basic diagnostic process
• Preventative maintenance inspection and repairs
• Location of fuse panels and relays
• Navigating factory service information  and reading wiring schematics
• Navigating and using factory scan tools
• Documenting, typing, and writing cause and correction on repair order

Championship Round

Provide the team vehicle to be bugged by the OEM Field Service Engineer:

• The vehicles will not be jacked or lifted. 
• All services and repairs will be made while resting on all four tires. 
• There will be NO raw fuel bugs or repairs.
