Some disabilities may require necessary testing accommodations. These accommodations may include, but are not limited to:

  * Extended Time usually means “time and a half”. For example, some students are authorized to have 1.5 hours on a test that would otherwise allow only 1 hour. However, in some instances, “double time” may be authorized if warranted by certain disability issues and/or the format of certain exams.

  ** Students are permitted access to prescribed medications (or certain over-the-counter medications) where appropriate. This may include other types of medications or medically necessary items (such as asthma inhalers or blood-sugar testing devices).

Accommodated Testing Center

Disability Services uses the latest in adaptive technology and assistive devices. We have a wide range of computer systems adapted to the specialized needs of people with visual impairments and other disabilities. For example, for hearing impaired students, real-time captioning can be used right in the classroom. 

Here are a few examples of some of the latest and greatest innovations in accessible technology. In some cases, a related or similar device is available for student use at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ. But not always!

Disability Services can help students with disabilities identify cooperative education opportunities. These placements are closely coordinated with appropriate academic departments on campus enabling students to receive college credit for work performed. Our office also works with various external agencies to locate potential work experience and opportunities for our students.

Options for adapting curriculum for students include:

• Raised line drawings for graphs and figures
• Altering the location of lab equipment or classrooms
• Assistance with operating specialized equipment (in some instances)

ASL interpreting, transcribing, and captioning services are available for students who qualify. These services are available in the classroom, curriculum-related events, and university sponsored activities.

Frequently Asked Questions 

Disability Services can provide guidance regarding accessible routes and, in case of construction, available alternatives. When necessary, the Disabilities Services may arrange to relocate courses to more accessible locations. Most classrooms are fully accessible; however additional accessible seating can be arranged upon request.

Reading services are available for students who have reading impairments. These services include:

• Access to the Kurzweil 3000 system as well as recorded textbooks

Students with disabilities can request priority registration and/or registration assistance based upon need.
