Visiting Artist Talk: Carlos Martiel

On Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m., please join the Afro-Latin America: History & Culture class taught by DOVAD's very own Dr. Maria del Mar Gonzalez-Gonzalez and Dr. James Almeida (Dept. of History) for an artist talk by Afro-Caribbean performance and installation artist Carlos Martiel.

The event is free and open to the public.

Student Spotlight: Jessenia Bigelow and Claire (Tink) Safeer

Jessenia Bigelow and Claire (Tink) Safeer, were recently selected for the Utah chapter of the American Association of University Women's annual Utah Women Artists exhibition and both received juror awards for their pieces.

Congrats Jessenia and Tink!

2024 Biennial Faculty Exhibition

ACT Lab Open House

Please join us on Wednesday, Aug. 28 in the ACT Lab (KA 306) from 10 a.m.-noon for an open house!

Students are welcome to come check out the ACT Lab to see how they can use the tools in the room to make art.

3D printers, laser cutters, plotters and more! This lab has everything you need to take your art to the next level.

 

New Faculty: Carter Pasma

Carter Pasma is the 3D Studio Manager and Foundations Assistant.

Pasma is a practicing ceramic artist making primarily wheel thrown functional pottery. He is currently researching cone 10 soda firing, high alumina clay bodies and the effects reduction cooling have on the clay and glaze in a soda kiln. In May of 2022, Pasma was named as one of Ceramics Monthly's emerging artists. He has published multiple articles in Pottery Making Illustrated and Ceramics Monthly. Pasma regularly shows work around the country.

He earned his BFA in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. After obtaining his BFA he was a post-bacc at Montana State University for two years, he then went on to earn his MFA in Ceramics from Utah State University.

New Faculty: Cathy Qi

Cathy Qi is an Assistant Professor of Art Education.

Cathy Qi got her Ph.D. in Art Education from the University of Arizona and MFA in
Graphic Design from North Carolina State University. She has worked in various K-12
institutions worldwide and art museums across the United States. Her research interests and publications focus on museum education, online teaching, global art communication and
multicultural art education.

New Faculty: Ben Evjan

Ben Evjan is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design.

Ben Evjen is a maker, designer and educator who relies upon experimentation and conceptual thinking. He has taught at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Utah Valley University. He earned his MFA in Design/Visual Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University and his BFA in Graphic Design from Utah State University.  

His current creative work explores the creation of therapeutic toys for children whose caregivers suffer from epilepsy.
