Advising
Graduate School Preparation
Many of our students plan to attend graduate school in fields such as Physical Therapy, Dietetics, and Occupational Therapy. For any of these outcomes, consider taking the following steps while attending Weber State:
-
Figure out which graduate program is the best fit. The Career Services Office provides an excellent Major & Career Navigation service for all 91¶ÌÊÓƵ students. Our Career Services advisor can also be booked through Handshake.

Meet with a Pre-Professional Academic Advisor. Pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, and pre-dietetics students can meet with Matthew Smith for both major and graduate-school advising. Students with other outcomes in mind are encouraged to explore the Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke Family Pre-Medical Programs page.
-
Build a prospective program spreadsheet. Use this sheet as a template. It is generally recommended that students aim to apply to at least 8-12 graduate programs.
-
Meet with your major academic advisor to integrate all prerequisite courses into your baccalaureate graduation plan.
-
Take the GRE (Graduate Records Examination) at least six months prior to the graduate school application window. This will permit time to retake the test as needed.
-
Prepare application materials at least one month prior to the graduation school application window. This includes the following:
- Three letters of recommendation (with at least one professional and one academic reference)
- A letter of intent
- A resume
- GRE (or an equivalent required exam) scores
- Any other supplementary materials required by specific graduate programs (check your prospective programs’ websites for details)
Pre-Admission
Before beginning with a Department of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences program, please contact our department’s academic advisors for help with admissions, choosing a major, transferring credits, declaring a major, or any other academic concerns.
Current Students
Once admitted, continue meeting with the department academic advisor, who will help with course sequencing, graduate school preparation, finding internships, and directing engagements with a faculty advisor when necessary.
We recommend meeting with our advisor at least once within the first two weeks of each semester.
It is the students’ responsibility to schedule any necessary meetings.
