Scholarships

The following scholarships are available to math major students:

General Scholarships

Academic Scholarship (or Academic Waiver) is a scholarship awarded based on grade point average (GPA). The university funds the scholarship. To apply for this scholarship, complete the Specialized Scholarship Application form through your student eWeber portal (go to Financial Aid Category on the left and then click on Specialized Scholarship Application). Math Scholarships 

The Mathematics Department awards the following scholarships to students whose major is in the Math Department, as funding permits:

  • Roy H. and E. Elva Miller Memorial Scholarship: For students who demonstrate an interest and competence in mathematics and are deserving of scholarship help or recognition. Criteria: Successful performance in math courses, including student teaching in math; successful performance in math intensive courses, such as physics; Grade point average (GPA)
  • Joshua Eisenstat Memorial Scholarship: For a full-time student with a declared major in mathematics, minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 3.0. First preference is given to students who provide personal service to Special Olympics or other organizations serving disabled children. Secondary preference is given to students who demonstrate exceptional extracurricular activity.
  • Billiards Scholarship: For a full-time student with financial need and a minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to students studying applied mathematics or pursuing their math teaching certificate. Preference also is given to students who show interest or involvement in billiards.
  • Patricia Henry Scholarship: For a junior or senior student with a declared major in Math Teaching, minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 3.0
  • MirAftabi Applied Math Scholarship: For a student with the applied math major, minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 2.5
  • Merlon L. Stevenson Scholarship: For a full-time student with a declared major in mathematics, minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 2.5. Preference is given to a student-athlete. 
  • David Tolman Scholarship: For a student with applied math or math teaching major, minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 2.5

Diane Pugmire Scholarship: 

Awarded by the math department to an Elementary Education major student working toward a Level 2 mathematics endorsement or a 21-23 hour mathematics specialization and a minimum 91¶ÌÊÓƵ GPA of 3.5. If you are a math teaching major, this scholarship does not apply to you.

College of Science Scholarships
(available to math major students)

Private Foundation Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Have a declared major in the college of science
  • Have at least 60 credit hours at the beginning of the school year
  • Be a full-time student during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Have a GPA of 2.5
  • Be able to prove legal residency of the United States. 

To apply for this scholarship, submit a completed application form with supporting documents to the College of Science office (Science Lab 611). Go to the College of Science Scholarships page and select College of Science Private Foundation Scholarship.


Davidson Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a declared major in the College of Science
  • Have at least 60 credit hours at the beginning of the school year
  • Be a full-time student during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Be able to prove legal residency of the United States
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a Utah resident
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 

To apply for this scholarship, submit a completed application form with supporting documents to the College of Science office (Science Lab 611). Go to the College of Science Scholarships page and select Davidson Scholarship. 


NaDene Craver Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a declared major in the College of Science
  • Be able to prove legal residency of the United States
  • Preferably, be a junior or senior during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Have at least 60 credit hours at the beginning of the upcoming fall semester
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0

To apply for this scholarship, submit a completed application form with supporting documents to the College of Science office (Science Lab 611). Go to the College of Science Scholarships page and select NaDene Craver Scholarship.


Michael P. Ott Memorial Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a declared major in the College of Science
  • Have at least 60 credit hours at the beginning of the school year
  • Be a full-time student during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Be able to prove legal residency of the United States
  • Be a student who had to overcome significant obstacles and difficulties (such as a physical hardship or learning disability) in learning the skills necessary to achieve academic success. 

Preferences will be given to applicants who graduated from a High School in Davis County. GPA and financial need are not criteria for this scholarship. 

To apply for this scholarship, submit a completed application form with supporting documents to the College of Science office (Science Lab 611). Go to the College of Science Scholarships page and select Michael P. Ott Memorial Scholarship. 


Harold W. and Helen Ritchey Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must: 

  • Be a declared major in the College of Science
  • Have at least 60 credit hours at the beginning of the school year
  • Be a full-time student during the period when the scholarship is in effect
  • Have an interest in scientific research and/or science teaching
  • Have a GPA of 2.5 

To apply for this scholarship, submit a completed application form with supporting documents to the College of Science office (Science Lab 611). Go to the College of Science Scholarships page and select Harold W. and Helen Ritchey Scholarship. 


Dr. Cyrus M. McKell Memorial Research Scholarship: This prestigious one-year scholarship recognizes commitment to scientific research. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must: 

  • Be a major in the College of Science
  • Have at least 60 credit hours at the beginning of the school year
  • Be a full-time student during the period when the scholarship is in effect 

In addition, the following criteria will be used to determine the scholarship recipients: 

  • Minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 hours per semester)
  • Enrollment in at least three credit hours of research during the year of the scholarship in one of the following courses: MATH 4910; BTNY 4800,4850, 4970; CHEM 4800,4990; GEO 4800,4970; MICR 4800; PHYS 4800,4970; ZOOL 4800,4970.
