Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) Registration
The basic objective of credit/no credit grading is to allow students the opportunity to enroll in classes outside their major or minor on a pass (CR)/fail (NC) basis without affecting their GPA.
The following rules apply:
- Freshmen students may take no more than one class per term on a credit/no credit basis.
- Students with 30 or more credit hours who have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above may register for no more than two classes per term on credit/no credit basis.
- A maximum of 20 hours of credit/no credit in elective courses may be used for graduation.
- Classes taken on a credit/no credit basis will not satisfy major, minor, general education, or specific course requirements. The University Curriculum and General Education Committee have designated a few exceptions to this rule. Please see the academic department for information on these course exceptions.
- Grades on the credit/no credit system are not included in computing the term or cumulative grade point average. A grade of credit is recorded only for letter grades of C- and above. Grades less than C-, including UW, will be recorded as no credit.
- Students who change their Program of Study must submit the appropriate form to the Records Office and request the grade be changed to the letter grade issued by the instructor if a credit/no credit course applies to the new Program of Study.
- If a student has previously taken a course for a letter grade, the same course may not be retaken for credit/no credit.
- Choice of credit/no credit registration should be made at the beginning of the term, but a student may change classes to credit/no credit status until the CR/NC deadline. This date can be found in the University's .
- The instructor is not notified when a student takes a class for a credit/no credit grade. The instructor will assign a letter grade on the Final Grade Report and then the Records Office will convert the letter grades to credit or no credit.

Potential Consequences of Declaring Credit/No Credit
Before switching to credit/no credit, be sure to understand the potential consequences. It is best to to talk about these. Please read through the potential consequences before meeting with your advisor.
International Students
Receiving “no credit” may put an international student’s visa at risk. To maintain their visa eligibility, all undergraduate international students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours with 9 credit hours of Face to Face (FTF) and/or Hybrid (HYB-91¶ÌÊÓƵ)---(NOT Hybrid virtual), unless you have prior approval to enroll in less hours. Graduate Students must be enrolled in 9 credit hours with 6 credit hours of Face to Face (FTF) and/or Hybrid (HYB-91¶ÌÊÓƵ)---(NOT Hybrid virtual). Only the International Student and Scholar Advisors can approve you to enroll in less credit hours. See the for more information.
Financial Aid Eligibility
Are you a recipient of Pell grants, loans, or scholarships? Your eligibility for these forms of financial aid can change with CR/NC grades! See Financial Aid for more information.
Degree Requirements
A CR grade cannot be used to complete major, minor, or general education courses in most circumstances. If you are taking the course as an elective, then a CR grade is fine, but if you need the course to fulfill a degree requirement, CR/NC is probably not the right option for you.
GPA
How is your GPA? Are you just a little shy of the GPA requirement for graduation, program acceptance, or good academic standing? While CR/NC grades don't hurt your GPA, they don't help it either. If you were counting on a GPA bump, that won't happen with CR/NC grading.
Course Repeats
A CR grade cannot replace a letter grade for a course that has been previously taken.
Course Transferability
We hope you stay at Weber State, but if you plan to transfer your coursework to another institution, CR/NC grades may only be accepted as elective credit or may not be accepted at all.
Graduate/Professional School
Do you have plans for graduate or professional school? CR/NC grades may not be accepted, or may make you less competitive! We cannot guarantee how other institutions will treat these grades. If you have been conditionally accepted into a graduate program contingent on completion of a specific course with a minimum letter grade in order to be fully admitted, the CR/NC option may not work for you.
Student Athletes
Student athletes must maintain specific academic standards for NCAA eligibility, including minimum enrollment, minimum GPA, and satisfactory academic progress. Selecting CR/NC or W grades may hurt your academic eligibility. See your athletics advisor for more information.
Veterans/GI Bill
Dropping classes or changing to an NC or W grade will change your rate of pursuit and may create a debt with the VA for tuition, monthly housing allowance (MHA), and book stipend. See the for more information.
