48-hour Interdisciplinary Charrette

"By far, the interdisciplinary charette exercise brought a real-world and very applicable experience. The team effort and demanding deadline components are exactly what we do weekly in the design firm I am a part of. "

Each year, interior design students collaborate with Building Design and Construction majors along with Construction Management students from the College of Engineering, Applied Science & Technology at 91¶ÌÊÓƵ to solve a design problem in a 48-hour period.

The design charrette is an intense collaborative problem-solving technique, common in the design-build industry. Our charrette provides teams of students with practical experience developing creative solutions to design problems, while adhering to the time constraint. Challenges have an international, humanitarian or local focus.

Students are given the problem on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and are placed in teams of 4. Students then have until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday to produce presentation boards, video presentations and specifications for their final presentation. Team submissions are judged by allied professionals, industry leaders, community partners.

Winning concepts are then built each spring in-country by the Building Design and Construction Department.

Specified 3000-level Interior Design majors will participate as part of course requirements along with ARCH and CMT majors.  ID Courses participating: ID 3000, 3025, 3060.
