The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Samya Rose Stumo National Air Grant Fellowship Program
Aerospace Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Software Engineering / Systems Engineering
Accepting applications from graduate students in aerospace-related fields who are interested in learning how aviation legislation and policy are developed.
Students selected for the program will spend a year in either a Congressional office that has jurisdiction over the FAA, or in an office in the executive branch of government.
The application process runs until January 31, 2025. To apply, students must be a U.S. citizen, have an undergraduate degree and be pursuing an M.A. or PhD degree in an aerospace-related field, human factors or one the listed engineering fields. Students must be within a year of completing that degree. Interested candidates must email 9-APL-NAGF@faa.gov the following documentation that demonstrates interest in, and qualifications for, the Fellowship, including:
- A résumé.
- Statement by the applicant describing areas of interest in aviation policy and how the Fellowship experience will be important to individual career goals.
- Letter of nomination from applicant's academic advisor, or other appropriate academic faculty, stating the applicant's suitability for such Congressional or executive branch experience.
- Second letter of reference from another appropriate official, which can be another academic faculty member.
- Writing sample – a brief issue paper or memo by the applicant on any subject demonstrating the applicant's ability to communicate well.
- Transcript(s).

Responsibilities may include:
- Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.
- Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
- Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
- Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware andsoftware specifications.
Basic Qualifications, The candidate must: - Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full time in Fall 2025.
- Be majoring in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering or Systems Engineering.
- Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2025.
- Be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
Preferred Qualifications: - Be Majoring in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Systems Engineering.
- Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.0 or higher
- Current active Secret Security Clearance or higher
Intern Pay Range: - Bachelor’s: $21.75to $26.75per hour
